Frome Vale Academy welcomes Labour MP Damien Egan
Frome Vale Academy (FVA) was delighted to host Damien Egan, the Labour MP for Bristol Northeast, for a visit that brought democracy to life for its pupils.
The highlight of the visit was Damien’s revelation of this term’s democracy question posed to pupils: “Should pupils be allowed to eat outside in the summer when the weather is nice?”
This thought-provoking question has sparked lively debates among pupils, both in their classrooms and during a whole-school assembly, culminating in a vote where each pupil cast their decision via ballot papers.
The ballot result showed a resounding yes from pupils, so they will be allowed to eat outside later in the year when the weather is nice.
During his visit, Damien Egan shared insights into life as an MP, his journey into politics, and why the school’s focus on democracy is so vital.
He praised Frome Vale Academy for empowering young voices and promoting active participation in democratic processes.
Jan Saunders, Principal of Frome Vale Academy, said: “We are thrilled to have welcomed Damien Egan to our school.
“His visit has inspired our pupils to engage with the principles of democracy in a meaningful way.
“Learning through real-life experiences like this allows our pupils to understand the importance of having their voices heard and prepares them to be active citizens of the future.”
